Workshop Description:
Effective mentorship requires the ability to guide reflection, facilitate learning, assess performance, and support professional growth. This full-day workshop introduces interpreter mentors to a comprehensive mentoring framework that integrates coaching and mentoring approaches, guided self-discovery, assessment practices, skill development, and process management. Participants will learn techniques for facilitating reflective conversations, guiding mentee self-assessments, discussing interpreting decisions and processing demands, and understanding language and interpreting assessment frameworks. Topics include English, ASL, atypical ASL, interpreter processing levels (lexical, phrasal, and sentential), skill assessments, and strategies for supporting mentee growth through structured mentoring practices.
You will be able to explain the role of self-assessment and mentor assessment in interpreter development and discuss strategies for facilitating productive conversations about interpreting performance, language use, and decision-making.
You will be able to analyze assessment information to identify developmental needs by reviewing sample assessment scenarios and identifying potential areas for skill development and mentoring focus.
You will be able to demonstrate ability to use at least 1 assessment tool for the purposes of facilitating sign language interpreting skill development.
